CHOLESTEROL
THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE FATTY |
We have reached a point in our lives where we get everything "-free". We are so aware of our health and we're so obsessed with it that we need sugar-free soda. The way I see it is this simple: you're so scared your ass will get bigger because you drink a lousy soda, drink water! Plain, ol' water is good for you, it is rich in minerals, chlorine and residues. I'm just kidding, but the fact is that most products on the market have been touched by the "-free" label.
This is not necessarily bad, but I'm just pointing out this awareness. Actually, the doctors encourage us to be careful what we eat and what nutrients we take from our daily intake. On the other side, not everything that is "-free" is healthy. Being "free" of something means you will not get that: sugar-free, fat-free, etc...
Let's take cholesterol for example. This substance is produced by the liver from saturated fat found in food and it is present in the blood. This is natural and necessary for our body to function normally. However, like in every other case of excess, high levels of it can lead to blood vessels injuries, heart attacks and strokes - some serious "accidents" that we can't just overlook. This is why cholesterol had such a bad image, but we should not eliminate it from our system because, like every other substance, it has an important role in our well-being.
There are two type of cholesterol: the good one and the bad one. The bad one is the Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) and it is carried into the blood where it can build up and clog the arteries, leading to serious heart conditions. The good one is the High Density Lipoprotein (HDL), the one that carries the cholesterol back to the liver, where it can be eliminated.
We can't eliminate cholesterol because, first of all, it is not possible. At one point you will eat something that contains fat and it will keep showing in those medical charts. Secondly, it is responsible with building and repairing cells, producing sex hormones (both estrogen and testosterone), it gets converted into bile - which helps in the digestive process - and it is also present (in high quantities) in the brain and nerve tissues.
